The extension of a file indicates the type of file it is and is required by the web server to send the appropriate MIME type to the web browser. Hence it is important that you name your files with the appropriate extension.
Also, your file names have a bearing on the selection of the home (default) page, i.e., the first page that is shown to visitors on your site.
